Depot operator terminates all contracts; brand to remain

The German home decor chain Depot faces an uncertain future as its operating company, GDC Deutschland GmbH, announced it will cease business operations at the end of September. Owner Christian Gries informed the German Press Agency that all employment and rental contracts will be terminated as of September 30.

This decision impacts roughly 730 employees who will lose their jobs. The company had previously announced the closure of 66 of its approximately 150 stores in late June, followed by another 30 by early August. Gries cited customs duties, increasing competition from platforms like Temu, and cautious consumer spending as reasons for the company's financial difficulties.

Despite the widespread contract terminations, Gries expressed his determination to keep the Depot brand alive. He plans to transfer the brand, which he owns, to a different company and continue operations with a smaller team. Gries aims to renegotiate leases with landlords to keep some of the remaining 50 stores open.

Depot has struggled in recent years, having filed for insolvency in May. The company previously operated around 400 stores but has drastically reduced its footprint. The German retail sector, in general, is under pressure from weak consumer sentiment and the growth of online retail, with other chains like Kodi, Mäc Geiz, and Hellweg also recently filing for insolvency.
