Destry Damayanti Explains Flexible Division of Duties at Bank Indonesia

Bank Indonesia’s new governor, Destry Damayanti, says the central bank will not assign its portfolios permanently. The six members of the Board of Governors will each oversee operational areas, but those responsibilities can change over time.

Destry said she currently handles the Islamic economics portfolio, although another board member could take over the sector in the future. “So the allocation of areas is actually dynamic, allowing us to rotate,” she said at the Supreme Court building in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The former Bank Mandiri economist also stressed that the division of work does not give any individual board member control over a policy direction. Bank Indonesia’s policies will continue to be decided collectively at Board of Governors meetings.

Destry said the central bank also intends to bring back in-person press conferences after more than a year of announcing meeting outcomes online. “Of course, we will evaluate the exact timing later, but at the very least we are moving in that direction so we can interact better with everyone,” she said.

Destry was inaugurated as governor on September 2, 2026, for the 2026-2031 term. Aida S. Budiman and Solikin M. Juhro were sworn in as senior deputy governors alongside her.
