Detective investigating deadly Gyeongsan arson found dead

A police detective who was leading the investigation into a deadly arson at an apartment complex in Gyeongsan has been found dead. The 50-something detective, identified by the initial 'A', served as a team leader in the Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency's criminal investigation division and was part of the special investigation team formed to probe the arson case.

Authorities were alerted when the detective's family reported him missing on July 2. Using his mobile phone's location data, police located him near a reservoir in Changnyeong County, South Gyeongsang Province, later that afternoon. However, he was already deceased upon discovery.

An investigation into the cause of death is currently underway by the Changnyeong Police Station, as the incident occurred within their jurisdiction. Officials stated that no suicide note was found and, at present, no criminal elements have been identified in connection with his death. The Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency had formed a 36-member task force to investigate the arson, which occurred on the morning of June 23. The fire, set by a 71-year-old resident, resulted in three fatalities and five injuries, including the suspect.

The police have not released further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the detective's death, emphasizing that the investigation is ongoing. The case has cast a somber shadow over the ongoing investigation into the fatal arson incident.
