Dhaka Commute Disrupted by Heavy Rain, Offering Heat Relief

Dhaka experienced a disruptive downpour early today, significantly impacting the morning commute for thousands of residents. While the rain brought a welcome respite from several days of sweltering heat, it caused considerable inconvenience for office-goers, students, and other commuters navigating the waterlogged capital.

The heavy showers, which began before dawn and continued through the morning, left roads, footpaths, and open spaces drenched. Many commuters braved the elements to reach their destinations on time, seeking meager shelter under footbridges, shop awnings, and building entrances. Those caught without umbrellas faced the brunt of the deluge, with rainwater soaking their shoes and lower clothing.

Public transport offered little refuge for some. Passengers on buses reported water entering through broken or faulty windows, drenching those seated near them. One commuter, Rashedul Islam, described his journey as uncomfortable due to rainwater seeping in through a broken window, despite his urgency to get to work.

I had to get on the bus because I did not want to be late for office. But the broken window made the journey uncomfortable as rainwater kept coming in.

Another passenger, Shariful Hasan, noted that even with an umbrella, he couldn't stay completely dry, with his lower garments and shoes getting wet. Despite the discomfort, he acknowledged the rain's cooling effect after the recent intense heatwave.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department's Storm Warning Centre predicts intermittent rain and thundershowers in Dhaka and surrounding areas until noon. The forecast also suggests a slight decrease in daytime temperatures and continued rainfall in various parts of the country, with a possibility of heavy downpours in some regions.
