Dhaka officials attacked at site of earlier sanitation worker assault

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan and Dhaka-18 lawmaker SM Jahangir Hossain faced an alleged attack by supporters of a garment factory owner while visiting Uttarkhan in the capital. The incident unfolded around 2:00 PM in ward 46, where the officials had gone to inspect the site of an earlier assault on DNCC sanitation workers.

Earlier on Sunday, sanitation workers at a Secondary Transfer Station (STS) in Rajabari were reportedly attacked by individuals associated with Neptune Accessories Garments. This initial assault left 15 to 20 sanitation workers injured, with four sustaining serious injuries and requiring hospitalization. The DNCC stated that the situation escalated when the administrator, lawmaker, and police personnel visited the area.

According to a DNCC press release, an altercation occurred between sanitation workers and representatives of the garment factory owner. The situation reportedly turned violent when "hired miscreants," allegedly deployed by the factory owner, attacked the administrator and lawmaker in the presence of law enforcement. Several individuals were injured during this second attack.

In response to the incident, police detained three suspects, including one person from the factory owner's side. The DNCC Public Relations Officer, Md Zakir Hossain, confirmed the arrests and stated that those responsible would face strict legal action. The garment factory owner could not be reached for comment regarding the allegations.
