Dhaka University suspends, dismisses seven teachers over misconduct allegations

Dhaka University authorities have taken disciplinary action against seven teachers, suspending three and relieving four others of their academic and administrative responsibilities. The decisions were made during a Syndicate meeting on Tuesday, chaired by DU Vice-Chancellor Prof ABM Obaidul Islam. Professor Sadeka Halim, from the Sociology Department and a former vice-chancellor of Jagannath University, was suspended due to allegations of conduct "unbecoming of a teacher both in and outside the classroom, as well as offences involving moral turpitude." The university also suspended Prof Md Shafiqul Islam and Prof Afroza Shelley of the Department of Nuclear Engineering following student complaints and an inquiry committee's findings. Professor Md Abdul Muhit of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology was removed as department chairman and barred from all university duties. The Syndicate cited his alleged activities contrary to the spirit of the July Uprising, spreading propaganda against the university administration and government, supporting a banned organization, and issuing threats as reasons for the action. On similar grounds, Professors Abu Sara Shamsur Rouf and Md Rafiqul Islam were also relieved of their academic and administrative responsibilities. Additionally, Professor Mohammad Bahauddin of the Department of Persian Language and Literature was barred from all duties due to "various irregularities" and allegations of plagiarism within his department.
