Differentiated autonomy sparks clash between Italy's northern and southern governors

A heated political dispute has ignited between Italy's southern and northern regions concerning differentiated autonomy, a reform granting greater powers to regions. The conflict began after Puglia Governor Antonio Decaro urged southern governors to unite against the reform, which he claims will divert resources northward.

Decaro's call to action has drawn sharp responses from Lombardy Governor Attilio Fontana and Veneto Governor Alberto Stefani. The League party, which champions differentiated autonomy, views the reform as a matter of regional identity. Fontana expressed surprise at Decaro's stance, suggesting the governor is using the issue for political gain. He argued that autonomy, when properly applied, benefits territories without creating disadvantages for others.

Stefani echoed Fontana's sentiments, criticizing the center-left for obstructing the autonomy law. Regarding healthcare, a sensitive aspect of the reform, Stefani stated that it is fair for a well-managed region to use its allocated resources to ensure citizens' right to health. This perspective, however, has been directly challenged by Decaro.

Decaro refuted claims of seeking political consensus, asserting his sole focus is serving the people of Puglia, especially those needing healthcare. He countered Stefani's point on healthcare spending, highlighting that not all regions have equal capacity to spend, leaving those with fewer resources behind. Decaro reiterated his appeal for mobilization, hoping that governors from other regions, particularly those under recovery plans, will join him in defending equal rights and services for all citizens, regardless of their location.
