Director Jang Hang-jun leverages 'King and Clown' success to attract film titans to Jecheon festival

Jang Hang-jun, the director behind the blockbuster hit 'The King and the Clown,' is bringing his characteristic humor and star power to his role as executive chairman of the 22nd Jecheon International Music Film Festival. Known for his affable personality, Jang aims to make the festival a vibrant platform for both established and emerging talent.

The festival, scheduled from September 3 to 8, boasts an impressive guest list, a testament to Jang's elevated status and extensive network. Directors Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon-ho are among the prominent figures set to attend, alongside other filmmakers, broadcaster Son Suk-hee, musician Kim Yoon-ah, and actors Jeon Mi-do. This gathering aims to foster dialogue and collaboration, showcasing film as a collective endeavor.

I wanted to express it with a cheeky joke rather than emphasizing the identity of a music film festival or making grand declarations to attract more audiences effectively.

Jang emphasized his admiration for directors like Park and Bong, citing them as examples of integrity and professionalism in the industry. "The reason I am proud of the film industry is because of directors Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon-ho," he stated, noting their respect for cast, crew, and audiences. Their willingness to participate, despite busy schedules, underscores the festival's growing prestige.

I think it was possible because of the lingering buzz from 'The King and the Clown.' The masters of the film industry will have many conversations with audiences and future filmmakers in Jecheon, showing that film is a product of collective intelligence involving hundreds of people.

This year's festival will screen 189 films from 45 countries, including the opening film 'The Boy and the Tree,' a musical praised at the Cannes Film Festival. Beyond the competitive sections, the festival introduces new programs like 'Film's Life,' a workshop featuring writers and composers, aiming to deepen audience engagement with the art of filmmaking.
