Korea University Clears Professor Yoo Dam of Research Misconduct Allegations

Korea University has concluded its investigation into allegations of research misconduct concerning Yoo Dam, a professor at Incheon National University. The university's Research Integrity Committee determined that the research practices in question do not constitute misconduct.

The allegations surfaced last year when Yoo Dam was appointed to a professorship at Incheon National University, sparking accusations of preferential treatment. Specifically, concerns were raised about her doctoral dissertation, which was submitted shortly before her appointment. Critics alleged that her academic work involved "salami-slicing" and "self-plagiarism," suggesting that multiple papers were derived from the same research within a short period.

Following the initial accusations, which were raised during parliamentary audits, the Ministry of Education forwarded the complaint to Korea University, as Yoo Dam obtained her doctoral degree in business administration from the institution. The university's Research Integrity Committee then launched a formal investigation into the matter.

In its findings, the committee stated that Yoo Dam's thesis practices align with "general research practices" and are "difficult to view as misconduct." A university official confirmed that no further procedures or actions have been decided upon at this time.

Meanwhile, a separate police investigation is ongoing regarding the circumstances of Yoo Dam's appointment. The Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency filed a complaint against Incheon National University's president and others last November. Police conducted searches of the university earlier this year and have since investigated Yoo Dam's father, former lawmaker Yoo Seung-min, on suspicion of obstruction of business.
