Director Kim Chang-min case: Defendants deny all charges in first trial

Two defendants accused in the death of film director Kim Chang-min have vehemently denied all charges, including murder and violating the welfare of persons with disabilities, during their first court appearance. The initial hearing was held at the Uijeongbu District Court's criminal division.

The prosecution alleges that the defendants, identified as A and B, both 32, engaged in a violent altercation with Director Kim on October 20 last year. The incident allegedly occurred at a restaurant in Guri City, where the defendants, along with others, were dining. They are accused of brutally assaulting Director Kim with fists and other means, leading to his death from subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Prosecutors strengthened the charges from assault resulting in death to murder, citing evidence gathered during supplementary investigations, including recorded phone conversations. They believe the defendants acted with the intent to kill. Additionally, the prosecution added charges related to the violation of the Child Welfare Act, noting that Director Kim's son, C, who witnessed the assault, has autism spectrum disorder and is a severely disabled person.

The defense maintains that the defendants could not have foreseen Kim's death and therefore deny any criminal intent. The court is now tasked with examining the evidence presented by both the prosecution and the defense to determine the facts of the case and deliver a verdict.
