Discarded rice cooker yields 'pure gold worth $15,000' for grieving family, thanks to honest guard

A security guard in Geoje, South Korea, has been lauded for his honesty after discovering a significant amount of pure gold hidden in a discarded electric rice cooker. The guard found the gold, weighing 25 don (approximately 93.75 grams) and valued at 21 million won (about $15,000 USD), while organizing trash for recycling. The contents included gold bars and rings. Recognizing the value and the potential for the items to be sentimental, the guard immediately reported the find to the Okpo police station, requesting assistance in locating the owner. Police reviewed CCTV footage and conducted inquiries, eventually tracing the rice cooker to the family of a recently deceased woman. It was revealed that the gold was a bequest from the mother to her children. The family, while clearing out her belongings, had inadvertently discarded the rice cooker without checking its contents. Police have since returned the gold and the rice cooker to the grieving family.
