Disinformation and Distrust Hamper Ebola Response in Eastern Congo, Expert Says

The fight against the Ebola epidemic in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is being significantly complicated by a dual threat of misinformation and deep-seated community distrust, an expert warned. André-Michel Essoungou, an expert focused on combating disinformation, stated that these factors are creating major obstacles for response operations in the North Kivu and Ituri provinces. He emphasized that rebuilding confidence between the local populations and the medical and aid teams on the ground has become a paramount concern. Without this trust, Essoungou explained, efforts to contain the virus and prevent further spread are severely hampered. The challenge lies not only in providing medical care but also in countering false narratives that fuel fear and suspicion, thereby undermining public health initiatives. Essoungou stressed that tackling the spread of misinformation is now a key battleground in the overall effort to curb the transmission of the deadly virus.
