“Do not approach”: Wild fox spotted in Almaty courtyard

A red fox took a casual-looking walk through a courtyard near Al-Farabi Avenue, but experts are warning Almaty residents not to treat the encounter as harmless. Video of the animal circulated on social media, showing it moving through the yard as if searching for food.

The Ile-Alatau National Park press service confirmed that the animal was a red fox, or Vulpes vulpes. The species is common across the foothills and mountains of the Trans-Ili Alatau and around Almaty. Foxes do not often appear within the city, experts said, but such visits happen periodically and are not considered exceptional.

The park's advice is simple: do not approach, catch, pet or feed a fox, even if it appears calm. If the animal is healthy and moving away, residents should leave it alone. Aggression, an unusual lack of fear, disorientation or visible injuries should be reported to city services. Anyone bitten or scratched should seek medical attention promptly because foxes can carry rabies.
