Kazhydromet Warns Astana and Three Other Cities About Air Pollution Conditions

Kazhydromet has warned residents of Astana, Oral, Aktobe and Atyrau that weather conditions could contribute to air pollution on September 2.

The warning applies to Oral and Aktobe, as well as to Atyrau overnight and Astana during the day. Forecasters use the term “adverse meteorological conditions” for combinations of short-term weather factors, including calm winds, light breezes, fog and temperature inversions, that can trap harmful pollutants in the surface layer of the atmosphere.

Astana is expected to have variable cloudiness and dry weather. Northwesterly winds will shift southwest, reaching 7 to 12 meters per second at night and 2 to 7 meters per second during the day. Temperatures should fall to 1 to 3°C overnight, with ground frost of 1°C, before rising to 15 to 17°C.

Aktobe and Oral are forecast to remain dry, with variable cloudiness and no rain. Aktobe will have southwesterly and westerly winds of 3 to 8 meters per second, while winds in Oral will come from the southwest at 5 to 10 meters per second. Their daytime temperatures are expected to reach 27 to 29°C.

Atyrau is expected to be mostly clear and dry, with southeast winds of 2 to 7 meters per second overnight and 5 to 10 meters per second during the day. Temperatures there should rise from 12 to 14°C at night to 28 to 30°C in the afternoon. Meteorologists also said Kazakhstan would experience contrasting conditions during the first days of autumn, including localized overnight frosts in the north and rain, thunderstorms and sleet in several regions.
