Doctor's invoices near $55,000 raise concerns amid hospital's $185 million debt

Concerns are mounting over exceptionally high payments to doctors working on contracts in Poland, with a specific case at the Wojewódzki Szpital Specjalistyczny im. Stefana Kardynała Wyszyńskiego in Lublin drawing significant attention. While discussions about high physician salaries have been ongoing, invoices revealing payments close to 220,000 Polish zloty have surfaced, raising questions about financial management at the facility.

The hospital, one of the largest medical centers in the Lublin Voivodeship, is grappling with a substantial debt that has reached 741 million Polish zloty. It reported a loss of 88 million Polish zloty last year. Amidst these financial difficulties, a single doctor reportedly issued three invoices totaling nearly 220,000 zloty for services provided in the neurosurgery department, which opened in early 2024. The invoices, dated February 29, 2024, were for services rendered in the first half of the department's operation.

Sources within the hospital expressed surprise and concern over the scale of these payments, especially for specialists. One informant told RadioZET.pl that while doctors, particularly specialists, should earn well, the amounts seen at the Lublin hospital are excessive. "What is happening at al. Kraśnicka is already a gross exaggeration. One doctor issued invoices for over 200,000 zloty," the source stated, adding that the amounts were broken down into smaller bills to appear less shocking. "And then we wonder why healthcare is barely breathing."

The neurosurgery department itself was a significant investment, costing 32 million zloty, with over 29 million zloty coming from a government program. Its establishment was intended to shorten waiting lists for patients in the region requiring complex neurological procedures. The department employs 11 doctors. The way the services were described and billed on the invoices has also drawn scrutiny, with one source noting the apparent billing for a six-month period, which seemed unusual given the department's recent opening.
