Doctor Warns of Rising Youth Violence, Younger Perpetrators

Harald Widhalm, a trauma surgeon at Vienna General Hospital (AKH), has observed a concerning trend of increasing stabbing and violent injuries, with both perpetrators and victims becoming younger on average. He described a recent case where a 15-year-old was severely injured by a 12-year-old wielding a knife, an incident Widhalm characterized as an "absolute rarity" a decade or 15 years ago. "The threshold for using violence is decreasing, and weapons have become more accessible even to very young people," Widhalm stated. The surgeon detailed the critical surgery performed on the 15-year-old victim, who sustained a stab wound to the heart. The patient arrived with a dangerously unstable circulatory system due to blood accumulating in the pericardial sac, compressing the heart. A swift intervention by a multidisciplinary team, including cardiac surgeons, successfully drained the blood and stabilized the patient. Widhalm expressed cautious optimism about the victim's physical recovery, noting that while the heart itself did not suffer permanent damage, the patient's life was saved through a race against time. Addressing calls to lower the age of criminal responsibility to 12, Widhalm stressed the necessity of "tangible consequences" for juvenile offenders. He believes that even if not fully criminally liable, young perpetrators must understand that their actions have repercussions, thereby reinforcing inhibitions against violence. The doctor's observations underscore a societal shift towards earlier engagement with violence and easier access to weapons among youth.
