Doctors must lead fight against quackery, uphold ethics – NMA

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) is calling on doctors to spearhead the battle against quackery and unethical behavior within the healthcare system. NMA President Prof. Afekhide Omoti stressed the critical need for medical practitioners to uphold the highest professional standards to protect patients and restore public trust.

Speaking at the NMA's National Executive Council meeting in Abuja, Omoti stated that while combating external threats like unqualified practitioners is vital, doctors must also rigorously examine their own conduct. The meeting, themed "Transforming Healthcare Practice in Nigeria: Building Trust, Accountability and Collaborative Excellence," addressed persistent concerns about healthcare delivery quality and safety.

The fight against quackery must remain a major priority. But while we fight external threats, we must also uphold the highest ethical standards within our own profession.

Nigeria's healthcare system faces numerous pressures, including rapid technological advancements, evolving disease patterns, rising patient expectations, and a significant migration of health professionals. Omoti highlighted that rebuilding public confidence requires more than just tackling quackery; it necessitates a foundation of trust, accountability, professional excellence, and collaboration.

Dr. Emeka Ayogu, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, underscored the importance of professional standards and team-based care for patient safety and integrity. Dr. George Ebong, Chairman of the NMA Federal Capital Territory, described the association as a unifying force for practitioners dedicated to improving healthcare outcomes.
