Documentary to honor Paraguayan guitar legend Mangoré in Asunción

Asunción will honor the legacy of Agustín Pío Barrios “Mangoré,” a towering figure in classical guitar, with a free screening of the documentary "Santo de la Guitarra." The event marks the 82nd anniversary of the renowned Paraguayan composer and guitarist's death.

The film, "Santo de la Guitarra," directed by Carlos Salcedo Centurión and produced by the Centro de Proyectos Barrios Mangoré, delves into Barrios' life, his extensive body of work, and his significant international impact. Spanning 120 minutes, the documentary incorporates insights from researchers, students, and fellow artists. It traces Barrios' journey through Paraguay, El Salvador, and other nations across the Americas and Europe, where he solidified his global recognition.

"Santo de la Guitarra" also features historical records, previously unseen documents, and a soundtrack composed of Mangoré's original recordings alongside interpretations by prominent guitarists such as Cayo Sila Godoy, Felipe Sosa, Richard Stover, and Lito Barrios. The screening is scheduled for Friday, August 7, at 7:00 PM at the Casa Bicentenario de la Música “Agustín Pío Barrios.”

Agustín Pío Barrios, born in 1885 and passing in 1944, remains one of Paraguay's most vital musical figures and a leading light in 20th-century classical guitar. His compositions, including "La Catedral," "Danza Paraguaya," and "Las Abejas," are staples in the repertoire of concert guitarists worldwide, testament to a legacy that transcends both borders and generations. The event is supported by the Directorate of Cultural Relations and Tourism of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Guitarras del Corazón.
