Documentary 'Wanam' Showcases Food Security Efforts in Papua

The documentary 'Wanam: Planting the Future in Papua' sheds light on the crucial efforts to establish national food security in Indonesia's Papua region. Produced by the Wardhana Nawasena Network Foundation, the film chronicles the development of the Wanam area in Merauke Regency, South Papua, as a strategic national food production zone. The documentary launch in Jakarta also served as a platform for discussions on Papua's development, the challenges of food security, and the significance of digital literacy in processing information from social media. Professor Yudi Latif emphasized Papua's vital importance to Indonesia, citing its historical, ecological, and geopolitical significance, and highlighting its rich biodiversity and natural resources as key assets for the nation's future. Dean Ramella of the Wardhana Nawasena Network Foundation stressed that achieving food and energy independence requires a public capable of critical information assessment. He noted the pervasive influence of social media in shaping public perception on strategic national issues, urging the public to discern verified facts from unverified narratives. The film itself showcases the transformation of the Ilwayab District in Merauke, an area previously characterized by swamps and limited access, now developing with agricultural infrastructure. It details the implementation of roads, irrigation systems, and agricultural technologies adapted to the swampy terrain, all part of a National Strategic Project aimed at bolstering Indonesia's food security amidst climate change and growing demand. Beyond physical development, the documentary also underscores the involvement of the local community, with development activities creating new economic opportunities.
