Dominican Archive Director Calls Teachers' Textbook Accusations 'Reckless'

Roberto Cassá, director of the General Archive of the Nation (AGN), has sharply criticized the Dominican Teachers' Association (ADP) for its accusations against history textbooks used in the fifth and sixth grades. Cassá labeled the ADP's claims as "reckless" and "dishonest," suggesting the association's president had not actually read the books.

He explained that the texts were developed in accordance with the current curriculum, covering topics from the island's prehistory to the late 20th century. Cassá emphasized that contemporary events are treated as secondary, viewed from a present-day perspective, and include subjects like population distribution, national income, GDP, and constitutional reforms.

It seems the president of the ADP has not read the book, so it is a reckless and dishonest accusation because he encompasses all the books; then, if there is one in particular, he should have said which book and the page where his allegations are reflected.

The historian highlighted the multidisciplinary team involved in creating the books, which included specialists in editing, documentation, pedagogy, and psychology. He noted that textbooks differ from standard historical works, incorporating exercises and pedagogical tools to enhance student learning and engagement.

Cassá firmly denied the ADP's assertion that the books promote "denationalization" or a fusion with Haiti, calling such claims "fantasies." He stated he has prepared a document to counter these accusations, citing specific content related to Dominican history in the textbooks. He also described Juan Pablo Duarte as a "radical democrat and revolutionary" and a "true patriot."
