Dominican legal dictionary presented by institutions

The National School of the Judiciary, the Dominican Academy of Language, and the Guzmán Ariza Institute of Lexicography have jointly presented the "Diccionario jurídico dominicano." This marks the first general academic publication dedicated to the vocabulary of law in the Dominican Republic.

The extensive dictionary, published in two volumes totaling 1,387 pages, was directed by jurist and lexicographer Fabio J. Guzmán Ariza. Its creation spanned five years and eight months, stemming from an idea conceived a decade ago. The work meticulously defines 10,056 terms, includes 11,201 meanings, and cites 12,716 instances from legal and jurisprudential sources to support its definitions and document the usage of legal terminology within the nation.

During the presentation ceremony at the Supreme Court of Justice auditorium, Guzmán Ariza highlighted the dictionary's contribution to the movement for clear language in legal discourse. He stated, "Understanding the norms that govern us should not be the privilege of jurists, but a right of all citizens."

While primarily intended for legal professionals and students, the dictionary was designed for accessibility, allowing any citizen to consult and comprehend legal terms found in laws and judicial decisions. Recognizing the dynamic nature of legislation and jurisprudence, Guzmán Ariza proposed the establishment of a permanent working group to track legal reforms and prepare regular updates, ensuring the dictionary remains current.
