Dominican migration agents arrest man for smuggling Haitians

Dominican migration authorities apprehended a Dominican national for allegedly smuggling four undocumented Haitians, including a child, across the border. The arrests occurred in the Las Mayitas sector of Cruce de Ocoa during an operation by the Joint Task Force Los Pilones.

The intervention stemmed from intelligence indicating that undocumented Haitian migrants were crossing a river near Las Mayitas and being picked up by a vehicle. Agents intercepted a red Nissan Sentra, driven by Rufino Antonio González Martínez, leading to the detention of the driver and the migrants.

The Haitian nationals were taken to a processing center in Azua for deportation proceedings, while González Martínez was handed over to the Public Ministry for legal action. This incident highlights ongoing efforts by the Dominican Directorate General of Migration (DGM) to control irregular migration.

Nationally, the DGM reported a significant number of detentions and deportations on August 3rd. Across border crossings in Dajabón, Elías Piña, Jimaní, and Pedernales, 946 foreigners were detained for irregular status, and 907 were deported. These operations involved various security forces, including the Army and National Police, across multiple provinces.
