Dominican president offers condolences for death of former Emir of Qatar

Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader has conveyed his deepest sympathies following the death of Qatar's former Emir, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. The president signed a book of condolences at the Qatari ambassador's residence in Santo Domingo, offering his and the nation's solidarity.

In his message, Abinader expressed "most heartfelt condolences" and "solidarity" to the State of Qatar, its people, and the Royal Family during this "sensitive loss." He noted that the former emir's life and leadership left a profound mark on Qatar's history and development. Abinader offered strength and comfort to the current Emir, the Royal Family, and the Qatari people, wishing that the memory of the Father Emir endures with honor.

The former emir, who ruled from 1995 until his voluntary abdication in 2013 in favor of his son Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, is widely regarded as the architect of Qatar's modernization. He is credited with transforming the nation into one of the world's leading gas exporters and establishing its significant role as a mediator in numerous regional conflicts.

Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani ascended to power in the late 1990s by unseating his father in a bloodless coup while his father was traveling abroad. His reign is remembered for steering Qatar toward significant economic growth and a prominent position in international diplomacy.
