Dominican president to host new weekly program with self-directed questions

President Luis Abinader of the Dominican Republic is set to launch a new weekly program, “LA Agenda Semanal,” on Monday. This initiative replaces the previous format, "LA Semanal con la Prensa," which concluded in December 2025. The new program will adopt a closed-circuit structure, shifting the dynamic from journalist-led Q&A to a presidential-led discussion.

Alberto Caminero, the president's press director, explained that the program aims for the president to "be accountable to the population" and the country regarding his administration's management. In this new format, President Abinader will be the one directing questions to government officials. Media outlets will have the opportunity to submit questions in advance on Monday mornings to the Press Directorate or the General Directorate of Communication (Diecom), and can also pose questions during the streaming broadcast.

The president has an interest in being accountable. That has always been his interest, to be accountable to the population, to be accountable to the country for the management, and that they are public officials. And that is why it will be this style for the time being.

The previous "LA Semanal con la Prensa" ran for over two years, with journalists attending sessions at the National Palace to question officials on specific topics. The program ceased its regular run at the end of 2025, with Abinader initially stating it would resume its usual format in early 2026, which did not happen.

The inaugural session of the revamped program will focus on the Ministry of Education, aligning with the commencement of the 2026-2027 school year. The Minister of Education and representatives from related institutions, such as the National Institute of Student Welfare (Inabie) and the Directorate of School Infrastructure, are expected to participate. The program is slated to last approximately one to one and a half hours and will be streamed across various platforms, including radio, television, and the Presidency's social media channels. A post-program report will also be distributed to the media.
