Dominican Presidents Lead Political Parties Amid Regional Trend

President Luis Abinader's selection to lead the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) reinforces a common practice in the Dominican Republic: presidential figures heading political organizations during or after their terms. This trend, while not unique to the Dominican Republic, is a distinctive feature in some Latin American countries characterized by authoritarian regimes, highly personalized politics, or long-standing leaders.

This custom has become ingrained in the Dominican political culture. While some regional governments separate heads of state from party leadership, even when those leaders wield significant influence, the Dominican Republic has seen a convergence of roles. The official party, the PRM, follows this pattern, mirroring a trend seen in other major parties.

The practice dates back to at least 1996. The Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) saw former President Leonel Fernández lead the party until his departure in 2019, having previously held the presidency concurrently with his party leadership role. Before him, the party's maximum leader was the late former President Juan Bosch. Following a split in the PLD, Fernández went on to lead his own party, Fuerza del Pueblo (FP), and has been its presidential candidate in recent elections.

After Fernández left the PLD, Temístocles Montás served as interim president before former President Danilo Medina assumed the role, which he currently holds. With Abinader's recent selection, the three main Dominican political forces will now be led by individuals who have occupied the presidency: Abinader in the PRM, Fernández in Fuerza del Pueblo, and Medina in the PLD. This scenario marks a significant shift for the ruling party, which historically maintained a separation between party presidency and presidential candidacy or head of state.
