Dominican Republic asks UN to speed up deployment of support mission in Haiti

The Dominican Republic has called on the United Nations to expedite the deployment of support missions in Haiti, emphasizing the urgent need to restore security in the neighboring country. Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez reiterated his nation's support for renewing the mandate of the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) and the UN Support Office in Haiti.

During a UN Security Council session on Haiti, Álvarez stressed that while progress has been made, including the establishment of the mission's command structure and initial operations, the full deployment of committed contingents must be completed as soon as possible. He identified the lack of strategic air transport as a significant obstacle, urging nations with such capabilities to make them available to the mission.

"A purely logistical obstacle should not stand between the international community and the protection of an entire people," Álvarez stated. He acknowledged the leadership of the United States and contributions from Canada and other nations in providing resources, logistical support, and personnel. Álvarez highlighted that regaining security is a prerequisite for holding elections in Haiti.

He also called for the full implementation of sanctions against gang leaders and those who finance them or facilitate illicit arms trafficking. Beyond international aid, Álvarez stressed the importance of strengthening Haiti's National Police, judicial system, and state institutions to consolidate security gains. The Dominican Republic remains committed to the approved measures aimed at stabilizing Haiti.
