Dominican Republic's 'Reinas del Caribe' defeat Puerto Rico to reach volleyball semifinals

The Palacio de Voleibol Ricardo «Gioriber» Arias was electric as the Dominican Republic's "Reinas del Caribe" secured a direct path to the semifinals of the Central American and Caribbean Games. The home team defeated a resilient Puerto Rico 3-1, with set scores of 25-18, 25-19, 19-25, and 25-16.

Dominican dominance was evident early, powered by Yonkaira Peña, Gaila González, and Brayelin Martínez, whose attacks overwhelmed Puerto Rico. Brenda Castillo's exceptional defense further stifled the visitors, keeping them perpetually chasing the score. The first set concluded comfortably for the hosts.

Puerto Rico mounted a strong challenge in the second set, even taking a brief lead. However, the "Reinas del Caribe" asserted their experience with crucial blocks and powerful attacks from González and Martínez, securing the set and a 2-0 overall lead.

Despite facing a deficit, Puerto Rico rallied in the third set, capitalizing on Dominican defensive lapses and errors. The departure of Brayelin Martínez due to an injury further disrupted the home team, allowing Puerto Rico to win the set 25-19.

The final set became a tense battle, but Yonkaira Peña stepped up, leading a decisive offensive surge alongside Gaila González. This powerful run transformed a close score into an insurmountable lead, sealing the match for the Dominican Republic and igniting celebrations in the stands. Peña led all scorers with 23 points, followed by González with 18 and Martínez with 11.
