Dong Nai Police Foil Two Online Scams, Saving Nearly $60,000

Trang Bom police in Dong Nai province have thwarted two significant online fraud attempts, protecting citizens from losing close to 1.5 billion Vietnamese dong (approximately $60,000 USD).

The first incident involved a woman who was about to transfer over 1.3 billion dong to an online acquaintance. Police identified the scam as a "romance scam," where the perpetrator, posing as a high-ranking US soldier abroad, built a relationship with the victim via social media. The scammer then fabricated a story about sending valuable gifts and foreign currency, requiring the victim to pay fees to the "United Nations" to release the supposed assets.

Authorities intervened at the bank, explaining the fraudulent nature of the transaction. The woman, influenced by emotional manipulation, had believed the scammer and was on the verge of sending the money. Thanks to the police intervention, she halted the transaction, preventing a substantial financial loss.

Shortly after, police stopped a second woman from transferring 180 million dong for a fake online investment opportunity that promised high returns. After police explained the risks and deceptive tactics used by online scammers, she realized the danger and protected her savings.

Trang Bom police urge the public to remain vigilant against online relationships, especially those that quickly lead to requests for money, investments, or financial transactions. They advise citizens to contact the nearest police station if they encounter suspicious situations.
