Dongduk University fashion students win gold at Busan International Design Award

A team of fashion design students from Dongduk Women's University has achieved a significant international recognition, securing a gold medal at the 2026 Busan International Design Award (BIDA) in the fashion category. The award ceremony, which celebrated innovative design, took place on June 11.

The winning project, titled 'Snail', was created by fourth-year students Jeong Dahyun and Lee Eunji. Their design draws inspiration from the protective instinct observed in creatures like the woodlouse (kongjure) and the fetal position, where individuals curl up when facing threats. The students focused on the paradoxical nature of this defensive posture, exploring how curling up can paradoxically expose certain parts of the body, increasing vulnerability.

'Snail' was praised by the judges for its artistic execution and original interpretation of the concept. Through extensive research into human anatomy, movement, and structural design, the students developed a piece that visually represents inner anxiety and instinctive defense mechanisms. The work features organic curves and a three-dimensional silhouette, effectively translating the theme into a wearable art form. The jury also noted the project's strong aesthetic composition and innovative design approach.

Jeong and Lee expressed their ambition to grow as designers who can offer deeper perspectives and pose new questions through their work. Dongduk Women's University's fashion design program aims to cultivate professionals with a balanced blend of creativity and practical skills. The curriculum emphasizes the integration of cutting-edge digital technologies, such as generative AI and 3D clothing design, alongside project-based learning to help students bring their innovative ideas to fruition.
