Dongjak District Aims to Become Seoul's Next Hotspot with Han River Tower and Cable Car Plans

Seoul's Dongjak District is charting an ambitious course to elevate its status by transforming its Han River waterfront into a vibrant tourist destination. The district, often overlooked despite its 'Han River belt' classification, currently lacks a signature riverside park. Dongjak District Mayor Ryu Sam-young envisions changing this by developing areas like the Yongyangbongjeong pavilion into a landmark, aiming to draw visitors who typically frequent other popular Han River spots.

A key component of this plan is the proposed "Han River Tower," a 100-meter structure near Yongyangbongjeong, which will offer panoramic views. The mayor estimates its perceived height will rival the iconic 63 Building. To further enhance connectivity and create a unique riverside experience, a cable car is planned to link the tower with Nodeul Island.

The development strategy also targets areas like Noryangjin and the Olympic Expressway. Mayor Ryu pointed out that the expressway has historically separated the district from the river's image. Plans include constructing a bridge over the expressway near Heukseok-dong to reconnect the district with the Han River. Additionally, a large shopping mall is proposed for a football field site adjacent to the Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market. The district is coordinating these developments with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives.

Beyond riverside development, Noryangjin is slated for transformation into a hub for future industries. Currently designated as a vocational education special zone until 2027, the district aims to pivot towards education focused on the Fourth Industrial Revolution and artificial intelligence by 2028. Mayor Ryu, a former police superintendent, expressed confidence that Dongjak will become a central district in Seoul within four years, mirroring its historical significance before Gangnam's development.
