Doris Franco Femicide Trial Enters Final Stage; Verdict Possible Thursday

The trial for the femicide of educator Doris Franco is nearing its conclusion in Veraguas, Panama. The oral trial entered its final phase on Thursday, August 6, with the presentation of the last pieces of evidence. This precedes the closing arguments from the prosecution, the private accuser, and the defense.

Key testimonies scheduled for the third day of the trial included a psychiatric specialist from the Luis “Chicho” Fábrega Regional Hospital. Once all evidence is presented and arguments are heard, the three judges on the Trial Court will deliberate to determine the legal responsibility of the accused.

Yairo Fernández, the private accuser, stated that the possibility of a verdict being issued on Thursday hinges on the time the tribunal requires for deliberation. "Yes, it depends on the recess they determine. It is already a matter for the Trial Court. Then they will have to decide to evaluate each piece of evidence and the time they require," Fernández explained.

The trial commenced on Tuesday, August 4, at the Veraguas Criminal Justice System. The proceedings concern the femicide of Doris Franco, which occurred on April 26, 2024, in the La Primavera neighborhood of Santiago. The victim, 37, died from her injuries after being taken to the Dr. Luis “Chicho” Fábrega Regional Hospital.
