Double tremor in Chocó: SGC reports two earthquakes less than 30 minutes apart; felt in several cities

Two seismic events rattled the Chocó department of Colombia on Monday, August 24, within a short span of time. The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) reported both tremors, which were felt across various cities.

The first earthquake occurred at 5:05 p.m. with a magnitude of 3.7 and a depth of 59 kilometers. Its epicenter was located in El Litoral del San Juan (Docordó), Chocó, approximately 31 kilometers from Sipí. This initial tremor was detected by seismic monitoring stations throughout the country.

Just 24 minutes later, at 5:29 p.m., a second seismic movement was recorded. This quake registered a magnitude of 3.1 and had a depth of 43 kilometers. The SGC pinpointed its epicenter in Istmina, Chocó, also about 28 kilometers from Sipí. Maps released by the SGC show that both events originated in close proximity within the department.

The SGC has activated its platform for citizens to report felt earthquakes, allowing individuals to indicate whether they perceived either of the two tremors. Further details are expected as the situation develops.
