Dozens of Indonesian Women Scammed in Online Lottery Scheme, Losing $325 Million Rupiah

A group of women in Indramayu, Indonesia, have fallen victim to an elaborate online lottery scam, collectively losing approximately Rp 325 million (around $21,000 USD). The fraudulent scheme, operated through Facebook, preyed on unsuspecting participants with promises of easy returns.

Fifteen women, accompanied by their legal counsel, have formally reported the alleged scam operator to the Indramayu Police. Their lawyer, Ibnu Rohman, explained that the organizer enticed members with the allure of small discounts and a commitment to guaranteed payouts. The lottery draws were broadcast live on the organizer's Facebook account.

When the lottery draw was conducted live on Facebook, the name that came out was not a member or an individual who paid regular monthly dues, but rather the name of someone else. The lottery was fictitious.

However, the draws were found to be fictitious. Rohman stated that the names appearing as winners in the live broadcasts were not actual participants who had paid their dues, but rather individuals not involved in the scheme. This revelation exposed the lottery as a sham, designed solely to defraud the participants.

While 15 victims have come forward with their reports, totaling the aforementioned Rp 325 million in losses, it is suspected that the actual number of victims and the total amount lost could be significantly higher. The case highlights the persistent threat of online financial fraud, particularly targeting vulnerable groups through social media platforms.

For the victims who are currently present, there are approximately 15 people, not including the total number of others. The losses we have recorded so far are approximately almost Rp 325 million.
