Dozens of Ukrainian Drones Attack St. Petersburg, Hitting Oil Terminal

Dozens of Ukrainian drones targeted St. Petersburg, Russia's second-largest city, on Saturday, striking an oil terminal and crashing near the historic Peterhof complex without causing damage, according to city authorities. The attacks on Putin's birthplace unfolded as Moscow and Kyiv offered conflicting accounts regarding control of the strategic eastern Ukrainian town of Kostiantinivka.

Russia vowed retaliation, claiming to have intercepted nearly 500 Ukrainian drones and ten missiles overnight. This Ukrainian offensive followed a deadly Russian attack on Kyiv earlier in the week that killed 30 people, and a separate Russian strike on the northern Ukrainian city of Sumy, which claimed four lives, including a child.

In response to Moscow's ongoing military campaign, Ukraine has intensified its operations within Russian territory in recent months, with a particular focus on the oil sector. The governor of St. Petersburg reported that over 70 Ukrainian drones were downed over the city. He confirmed that an oil terminal in the Kirovsky district was hit, but stated that technical consequences were resolved and there were no casualties.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asserted that Ukrainian defense forces also successfully struck port oil infrastructure that generates revenue for Russia's war effort, as well as the important military target of Kronstadt naval base in St. Petersburg. Meanwhile, in Ukraine, a bombing in the city of Kramatorsk injured at least five children, and other regions reported multiple casualties. The Ukrainian military also denied Russian claims of capturing Kostiantinivka, asserting their soldiers continue to defend the city.
