DPP to Nominate Zhubei Mayor Zheng Chaofang for Hsinchu County Magistrate

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is nearing the final stage of its county and city mayoral election preparations, with most nominations settled. The sole remaining puzzle is the Hsinchu County Magistrate race, where the party is expected to officially announce its candidate this Wednesday.

Sources indicate that the DPP's Election Committee will convene to discuss the Hsinchu County Magistrate candidate and make a decision. The nomination is widely anticipated to fall upon Zheng Chaofang, the current Mayor of Zhubei City, who will be urged to run for the county-level position.

President Lai Ching-te and other senior party officials have been actively encouraging Zheng to run since late last year. They presented him with internal polls analyzing his chances of victory. By February, a strong consensus had formed within the party: Zheng's impressive track record as Zhubei City Mayor and his strengthening local influence position him well for a competitive bid for Hsinchu County Magistrate.

Despite the party's efforts, Zheng has remained non-committal, repeatedly stating his focus on his current role as Zhubei Mayor and ongoing municipal work. The DPP leadership has shown considerable patience, recognizing the strong connection between the Zhubei City and Hsinchu County Magistrate positions. They are also closely monitoring the internal consolidation of the rival KMT party in the region.

The DPP intends to formally announce Zheng's candidacy alongside Miao栗 Mayor candidate Lin Yue-chin on Wednesday, following the Central Executive Committee's approval. Party Chairman Lai Ching-te is expected to personally present Zheng with his campaign sash.
