Drama in Birmingham: Ieva Gumbs narrowly misses European Championship final

Lithuanian discus thrower Ieva Gumbs experienced a heartbreaking near-miss in Birmingham, failing to reach the European Championship final by the narrowest of margins.

Gumbs achieved her best result on her first attempt, launching the discus 58.03 meters. Her subsequent throws measured 57.23 meters and 55.96 meters, placing her eighth in qualification group A. Initially, her chances of advancing seemed slim.

However, as the B qualification group struggled to improve results, Gumbs remained within the final twelve spots before the last throws. The competition concluded with extreme disappointment for her. The Dutch competitor Alida van Daalen's final throw of 62.58 meters pushed Gumbs to twelfth place. Shortly after, Daria Zabawska of Poland threw 59.37 meters, displacing Gumbs from the final.

Gumbs ultimately finished in 13th place, just 45 centimeters shy of securing a spot in the final. Among the twelve finalists was the seasoned French athletics legend Melina Robert-Michon, a European Championship competitor since 1998, who achieved a throw of 60.89 meters.

This year's competition sees a new European champion crowned in the women's discus for the first time since 2006, as Croatia's Sandra Elkasevič, winner of seven consecutive championships, is not competing. Gumbs' season-best throw is 62.42 meters, with a personal best of 64.98 meters.
