DRC: Peace consortium calls for inclusive national dialogue

The Consortium for Peace and Development (CPD) in the Democratic Republic of Congo is urging political and non-state military leaders to participate in an inclusive national dialogue. The initiative, proposed by the President, aims to strengthen national unity and bring peace, thereby saving civilian lives.

Marie Ngombo Zaïna, the CPD coordinator, emphasized the need for broad support, both domestically and internationally, to foster consensus and a culture of dialogue. She highlighted the critical political, security, and institutional challenges facing the DRC. Zaïna believes this dialogue could be key to resolving the persistent instability in the eastern part of the country, which she attributes to repeated ceasefire breaches, the proliferation of armed groups, and the illicit exploitation of natural resources.

Zaïna also pointed out that women bear a heavy burden from this conflict. She is advocating for the establishment of a specialized unit to oversee the Women, Peace, and Security agenda, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2773. The President of the Republic had previously announced plans for an "inclusive, calm, and resolutely republican national dialogue" to bolster national cohesion while respecting the constitution and institutions. This announcement was made on July 17, 2026, by Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo after a meeting with religious leaders.
