DRC Prime Minister: Migrant Reception from U.S. is a Service to America

Prime Minister Judith Suminwa has clarified the nature of the temporary reception of migrants arriving from the United States in the Democratic Republic of Congo, framing it as a service provided to the U.S. Speaking on TV5 Monde, Suminwa emphasized that this arrangement is temporary and governed by a specific agreement between Kinshasa and Washington. She explained that these individuals are asylum seekers who were previously in the U.S. and that the Congolese government, in collaboration with U.S. migration services and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), has agreed to host them on a provisional basis.

Suminwa stressed that the presence of these migrants on Congolese soil is strictly time-limited. The DRC is actively working to find alternative solutions and suitable host countries for them. This approach underscores the government's commitment to managing the situation within international humanitarian law and migrant protection principles. The Prime Minister assured the public that the U.S. is fully responsible for the migrants' care, covering essential needs such as housing and food, facilitated by the IOM.
