Driver crashes into median with blood alcohol level more than three times the highest limit

A driver in Buon Ma Thuot crashed into a median after police recorded a breath alcohol level more than three times the highest violation threshold.

The incident happened at about 8:50 p.m. on Sept. 5, when the 57-year-old man, identified as T., was driving on Vo Nguyen Giap Street, part of the East-West Boulevard. His car struck the median near the roundabout at the intersection with Le Duan Street.

People who witnessed the crash recorded it and stopped the driver from attempting to drive away. Witnesses said he appeared intoxicated, had difficulty standing and wanted to leave in the car. They kept the scene intact until traffic police arrived.

Police took T. to hospital for drug and alcohol testing. The drug test was negative, but his alcohol reading reached about 1.34 mg per liter of breath, compared with the highest violation threshold of 0.4 mg per liter.

Police said he is expected to receive a fine of 30 million to 40 million Vietnamese dong and lose the right to use his driving licence for 22 to 24 months.
