Driver detected travelling at 115km/h in 50km/h zone

Irish police are renewing their appeal for drivers to be extra careful during the August Bank Holiday weekend, as a major roads policing operation continues. The enforcement campaign, which began Thursday morning, will run until Tuesday morning, aiming to curb dangerous driving behaviors.

Recent enforcement efforts have highlighted significant speeding violations. One driver was caught traveling at 172km/h in a 120km/h zone, while another was detected driving at 115km/h in a 50km/h zone in Clontarf, Dublin. These incidents underscore the risks associated with excessive speed, particularly during periods of increased traffic.

Garda Superintendent Liam Geraghty noted that bank holiday weekends are inherently dangerous due to higher traffic volumes. He stated that as of Sunday, over 2,500 drivers had been caught speeding, and 88 individuals were arrested for driving under the influence of intoxicants. He anticipates the number of DUI arrests to exceed 120 once formal statistics are compiled.

Data from January 1 to June 30 this year reveals a substantial number of fixed charge notices issued for various offenses. Over 119,000 notices were issued for speeding, more than 14,500 for mobile phone use while driving, and over 3,000 for not wearing a seatbelt. Additionally, gardaí have seized over 18,000 vehicles for offenses such as driving without insurance, a valid license, or NCT/CVRT, or for being an unaccompanied learner driver.
