Driver identified in Gastouni after killing stray dog on camera

Greek police have identified the driver of a car captured on video deliberately running over and killing a small, elderly stray dog in Gastouni. The incident, which occurred on June 18, has sparked outrage after the video circulated online.

The suspect, a 60-year-old woman residing in Gastouni, was identified by authorities on June 20 as part of their investigation. The case was initiated after a complaint was filed at the Pinios Police Department following the video's release. According to reports, the woman gave contradictory statements during her examination by police.

Security camera footage shows the vehicle approaching the dog, slowing down, and stopping in front of it. Seconds later, the car accelerates and drives over the animal, resulting in its death. The elderly stray had been a familiar presence in the neighborhood for over twenty years, cared for by local residents who considered it an integral part of their daily lives.

Under Greek law (Law 4830/2021), the intentional killing of an animal is considered a felony, punishable by imprisonment of up to ten years and a fine ranging from 30,000 to 50,000 euros. The woman is expected to be summoned for questioning soon, and charges related to the intentional killing of the animal are anticipated.
