Drone carrying explosives detonates in Bulgarian airspace near gas pipeline

A drone laden with explosives detonated in Bulgarian airspace near the border with Romania, close to a critical gas pipeline, according to the Bulgarian government. The incident occurred around 8:10 AM local time when the drone entered Bulgarian airspace and crashed in a sunflower field approximately 1,000 meters from the compressor station of the Transbalkan gas pipeline.

Prime Minister Rumen Radev reported that the drone was not detected in either Bulgarian or Romanian airspace prior to its crash. He stated that teams from the Bulgarian Border Police and the Ministry of Defense are working to determine the drone's origin. Radev clarified that it was not a hobby drone but a larger, more significant unmanned aerial vehicle.

Recent drone activity in the region includes Russian attacks on Ukrainian Danube ports, which are near Romania and Bulgaria. Romania had previously expelled a Russian embassy staff member in late July due to drone overflights.
