Drone Intrusion Halts Flights at Taiwan's Taoyuan Airport for 10 Minutes

Flight operations at Taiwan's Taoyuan International Airport were briefly suspended on Tuesday morning after a drone entered the facility's restricted airspace. The airport's drone detection system registered a signal within the no-fly zone at 8:23 AM.

In response, airport authorities immediately implemented standard operating procedures. Both the north and south runways were closed to takeoffs and landings starting at 8:27 AM. After a 10-minute safety assessment confirmed the airspace was clear, runway operations resumed at 8:37 AM.

The disruption impacted a total of nine flights, comprising one arriving and eight departing aircraft. Airport officials activated a joint defense mechanism and collaborated with relevant agencies to ensure the security of the surrounding airspace.

Taoyuan Airport Corporation stressed the significant danger drones pose to aviation safety when flying in restricted areas. Under Taiwan's Civil Aviation Act, individuals caught violating these regulations face fines ranging from NT$300,000 to NT$1.5 million (approximately $9,300 to $46,500 USD). The corporation urged the public to verify flight zones before operating drones to prevent legal repercussions and safeguard air traffic.
