Drones Spotted Over German Military Base Housing Sensitive Equipment

German authorities are investigating multiple drone sightings over a Bundeswehr military base in Mechernich, western Germany, where sensitive military equipment is stored. The security center at the military installation detected two drones on Thursday evening and alerted the police, who have launched an investigation.

This incident follows closely on the heels of another drone discovery earlier in the week. A drone carrying an explosive device was found at Leipzig airport, a strategic hub for military equipment. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser warned of a "new dimension of threat" and a potential "hybrid attack scenario," though no suspects have been named.

The Mechernich base features a 130-meter-deep underground storage facility, approximately 30,000 square meters in size, equivalent to four football fields. This facility holds equipment and spare parts, including components for the U.S. Patriot air defense system, which is designed to intercept ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and aircraft.

According to German media reports, private security personnel observed a total of six drone flights over Mechernich between Thursday evening and Friday morning. The recent drone activity has heightened security concerns in Germany, prompting Chancellor Friedrich Merz to convene a national security council meeting on Friday. The term "hybrid warfare," often attributed to Russia by Germany, encompasses sabotage, disinformation, cyberattacks, and espionage.
