Dubai Customs foils sophisticated attempt to smuggle 460 grams of raw gold

Dubai Customs inspectors at Dubai International Airport have foiled a complex smuggling operation, seizing 460 grams of 24-carat raw gold. The smugglers employed a sophisticated method, melting the gold into thin rods and expertly concealing them within the rubber frame and internal structure of a passenger's suitcase. This technique made the luggage appear normal and evade initial inspection equipment.

Despite the suitcase's ordinary appearance, the vigilance and expertise of Dubai Customs inspectors, aided by advanced technology, led them to detect anomalies on the X-ray scanner. A thorough search revealed the hidden gold rods, meticulously prepared to blend with the suitcase's original components. This seizure highlights the evolving tactics used by smuggling networks.

During the investigation, the apprehended passenger, an Asian national, stated she had received the suitcase from someone in her home country without knowledge of its contents. Dubai Customs is leveraging this incident to strongly advise all travelers against transporting luggage for others, emphasizing that individuals remain legally responsible for all items within their bags.

These programmes cover the identification of the latest concealment methods, reading body language, analysing behaviour and responding to different field scenarios, alongside professional use of the latest inspection and screening equipment and systems.

Khalid Ahmed, Director of Passenger Operations at Dubai Customs, praised the inspectors' efficiency in detecting even the most intricate concealment methods. He affirmed the organization's commitment to continuous training for inspectors, focusing on identifying new smuggling techniques, behavioral analysis, and the proficient use of modern inspection technologies to counter evolving threats.
