Dubai explores producing green jet fuel from organic waste

Dubai is investigating the potential for producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from its organic waste, according to the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy. This move is part of the emirate's broader strategy to support the aviation sector's transition to more environmentally friendly practices.

The initiative aligns with international goals to blend SAF with conventional jet fuel in the coming years. Beyond offering a cleaner fuel alternative, the project aims to bolster Dubai's circular economy by finding valuable uses for organic waste. However, the council has not yet released specific details regarding production capacity, timelines, or investment figures for the proposed project.

Meanwhile, Indonesia is also advancing its SAF development. State-owned oil company PT Pertamina (Persero) has partnered with Boeing to explore the creation of a SAF ecosystem within the country. This collaboration is a key component of Indonesia's efforts to decarbonize its aviation sector and accelerate its transition towards Net Zero Emission (NZE) targets.

Indonesia's commitment to SAF development is in line with President Prabowo Subianto's "Asta Cita" vision. The country is positioned to be a major SAF producer in ASEAN, with projections indicating a potential surplus of 2.2 million barrels per day by 2050, according to the ASEAN 2050 SAF Outlook report. Pertamina and Boeing will work together on various aspects, including feedstock identification, technology development, and policy support to expedite SAF implementation.
