Dutch favorite Demi Vollering wins stage and gains time on rivals

Demi Vollering delivered a dominant performance on the fifth stage of the Tour de France Femmes, claiming victory and crucially gaining time on key competitors. The Dutch rider for FDJ-Suez surged ahead, showcasing her strength in a race that significantly reshaped the overall standings.

The 140-kilometer stage from Mâcon to Belleville-en-Beaujolais featured eight categorized climbs, testing the riders' endurance. It was on the penultimate climb, the Col de Durbize, that last year's champion, Pauline Ferrand-Prévot of France, began to falter. She was dropped by the leading group and could not recover, ultimately finishing 2 minutes and 35 seconds behind Vollering.

Ferrand-Prévot's struggles were compounded by a poor performance in the previous day's time trial, leaving her with a substantial deficit in her quest to defend her title. Similarly, Paula Blasi of Spain, the winner of La Vuelta Femenina this year, also lost considerable ground, finishing 2 minutes and 27 seconds after Vollering.

Following this decisive stage, Vollering now sits in second place overall, just 12 seconds behind leader Marlen Reusser of Switzerland. Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Phinney of Poland is in third place, 1 minute and 17 seconds adrift. Blasi is tenth, 3 minutes and 51 seconds back, while Ferrand-Prévot has dropped to 17th, a significant 5 minutes behind the leader.
