Dutch government urges farmers off highways after fatal protest crash

The Dutch government has issued a strong plea to the agricultural sector to cease highway protests following a fatal accident that claimed two lives and injured at least six people. The incident occurred on a highway in North Brabant province when four vehicles were involved at the end of a traffic jam caused by tractors en route to a demonstration.

Prime Minister Rob Jetten described the practice of protesting on highways as "unacceptable and incomprehensible" due to the extreme danger it poses. He directly appealed to farmers to leave the motorways, stating, "Don't do it; get off the highway." Infrastructure Minister Vincent Karremans echoed these sentiments, calling such actions "extremely dangerous" and emphasizing that using highways for protests is "always a bad idea."

While police continue to investigate the exact circumstances of the accident, the Dutch traffic association ANWB confirmed it happened at the end of a traffic backup caused by tractors. Agricultural vehicles are prohibited from using highways in the Netherlands. The protest itself was organized against the provincial government's decision to revoke the licenses of five poultry farms due to their nitrogen emissions. Farmers fear this revocation could set a precedent for other agricultural operations.
