Dutch tourist dies after boat capsizes at Iguazu Falls

A tourist excursion at Iguazu Falls turned tragic when a boat carrying six Dutch visitors and two crew members capsized, resulting in one fatality and two injuries. The incident occurred Tuesday near Foz do Iguaçu on the Brazilian side of the falls.

Mark Lensink, a 26-year-old Dutch national on vacation with family, was identified as the deceased. He suffered drowning and cardiac arrest. Despite resuscitation efforts and transport to a medical center, he died shortly after.

Three women and one man received on-site medical attention and returned to their families. Another man, 49, remains hospitalized for observation, and a 48-year-old woman is being treated for a fractured foot. Both are reported to be out of danger.

The accident happened during a Macuco Safari tour, a popular attraction that involves a jungle ride followed by a boat trip on the Iguazu River, culminating in a close approach to the falls in turbulent waters. Investigators from the Brazilian Navy are examining whether the capsizing was due to river conditions, a technical failure, or operational error.

In response to the incident, Macuco Safari has temporarily suspended its tours to cooperate with the investigation. Some related water-based excursions in the area have also been halted. The accident occurred as the Iguazu River is experiencing exceptionally high water levels.
