Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith leads reggae icons honoured with national awards

Guitarist Earl “Chinna” Smith, a foundational figure in the roots-reggae movement, will be recognized with the Order of Distinction (Officer Class) for his indelible contributions to reggae music. Smith is one of eight prominent music industry figures acknowledged by the government of Jamaica in its 2026 National Honours and Awards ceremony.

Smith, who celebrated his 71st birthday on Jamaica's Independence Day, August 6, has played on some of reggae's most seminal songs and albums. His extensive discography includes collaborations on tracks like "Westbound Train" and "Cassandra" by Dennis Brown, "War Ina Babylon" by Max Romeo, and Bob Marley's "Rastaman Vibration."

The honors also extend to other influential artists and producers. Singer Stranger Cole (posthumously), producers Michael “Mikie” Bennett and Robert Livingston, and deejay Mr Vegas will also receive the Order of Distinction (Officer Class) for their roles in shaping reggae and the international rise of dancehall music. Percussionists Norman “Bongo Herman” Davis and Lawrence “Larry” McDonald, along with Carlyle Palmer, co-founder of Jet Star Records, will be awarded the Badge of Honour for Meritorious Service.

The National Honours and Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on National Heroes Day, October 19, at Kings House in St Andrew, celebrating the rich cultural heritage and artistic achievements of Jamaica.
